Write a story/scene about the girl in the photo. She’s visiting a new place, wore her new dress. Where is she? Who is she? Why is she seemingly dancing in public? Your story could easily lean toward an aesthetic, but dig deeper. If she is dancing, make it make sense. What are her goals, in the larger picture, and in the immediate. Use the opportunity to a make a character sketch, but with a purpose for the story.
Science Fiction Prompt
Write a story/scene about a shape-shifting alien who looks and decides to dress like the girl in the photo. Who is she with? Can she speak our languages (any of them)? Does “she” refer to herself as such? How is she reacting to our world? Use the opportunity to make a character sketch, but with a character that is literally alien.
Write a story/scene about a nation on the cusp of becoming modern or progressive. One of the changes is the way women dress. How is the dress in the photo different from how the women in this fantasy society dress? What is the situation the character(s) are in? What other fantasy elements are present? Use the opportunity to write about the politics and emotion surround how women dress, but in a fantasy setting.
Write a story/scene where another character (you decide who) sees the girl in the photo dancing down that hallway. Perhaps there’s a mystery going on in the background already (a death; a theft). What does the girl have to do with the mystery? What does the girl have to do with the character? Use the opportunity to write a strange character that is tied to mystery, seen through the eyes of an “ordinary” character who is trying to solve it.
Write a story/scene where about the girl in the photo, who falls in love on that day, in that hallway, in that dress. What is the fallout from this first meeting and love at first sight? Does it end well? Or does it end in heartbreak? Use the opportunity to write about a first love, focusing on the character you make out of the girl in the photograph.
Historical Fiction Prompt
Write a story/scene about the girl in the photo, but slightly change the dress to a more historically appropriate version. However, her hair is still down. For much of history, early 1900’s and earlier, this meant many different things over a periods of time, but usually it was scandalous for a woman to have her hair down in public. Write a story about why and who this character is, what her situation is, and how the other characters react to her. Write about the rules of a woman’s hair in polite society in whatever time period you choose, but weave into the narrative. Take this opportunity to write about an historically accurate social necessity, but in a way that would be interesting to a reader and within a story.
Write a story/scene where the girl in the photograph is a ghost and another character keeps seeing her. How does this character figure out who she is and how she died? Is she a poltergeist, or does she become one? Is she dangerous to the character? Or is the horror aspect something different, something more cerebral. Take this opportunity to write a horror story about a ghost that is actually very appealing looking, but still terribly frightening or dangerous.
